Capturing From VHS using Imovie

Capturing from VHS using iMovie

If importing from VHS, insert the video. Make sure NO DV tape is in the vcr. Make sure the VCR is on channel L1. You can change the channel by clicking on the button shown in the red circle below and turning the dial. Also, make sure the orange SVHS button is selected as shown below.

Now you can open up your existing iMovie project that was saved on the desktop, as demonstrated below.

The screen below is the main screen that you will be working from in iMovie. The Toggle button on the left lets you select whether you would like to have your clip from your camcorder automatically imported or manually imported. The difference between the two is that automatic you start from the beginning of your tape and it'll import the whole tape until there is nothing left of your clip. Manually lets you select where in your clip you would like to import first. The fast forward and rewind buttons will help you do that.

Wait for a blue screen to appear. Click play on the VCR, and your footage will begin playing within a few seconds. Click the Import button (circled in orange) below the movie viewing screen. This records your footage onto the computer. Hit Import again to stop recording. A series of thumbnails will pop up and give you a running time in minutes and seconds. Remember, don't clog up the hard drive will unnecessary footage. Once the import is complete it should look as it does in the picture below.

If you are still having difficulties a consultant on duty will be more than happy to assist you.
